Title: Mutual Loss
Fandom: The Lord of the Rings/ Tolkien Universe
Characters/Pairings: Elrond, Galadriel, Celeborn, (Arwen, Elladan, and Elrohir in the background)
Summary: Galadriel, Celeborn, and Elrond and co. ride back from the Grey Havens after Celebrían's departure.

They rode back from the Grey Havens in near silence, none of them knowing quite what to say. The sound of hoof-beats traveled with them, the gentle rhythm a backdrop to their thoughts, worries, and regrets. But no words were spoken until they came, at last, to Rivendell.

All dismounted, but despite Elrond's protests, Galadriel and Celeborn would stay no longer than was necessary to refresh their retinue and their horses. A solemn mood hung over the group and even their small talk was muted, tinged with sorrow and weighted with the words they did not yet have the heart to say. It was almost a relief when the Lord and Lady finally took their leave.

When each grandchild was embraced and Galadriel had pressed a kiss to each forehead, the two came to Elrond. Celeborn simply took his hand in his own and, with a silent nod of parting, returned to the horses.

But Galadriel lingered. Ordinarily, words came to her so easily. They were a tool, a plaything, something to mold and sculpt as she wished. Yet now, now when they were most important, none would come. What could she say to this man- the father of her grandchildren, her daughter's beloved, he who now must suffer just as she was suffering? Nothing would suffice. Suddenly, almost impulsively, she pulls him into her arms and embraces him, just as she would if he were her own child- something she had never done before and would do but once more thereafter.

"Take care- for her sake." And with that, she pulled back and returned to her husband's side, mounting her horse before Elrond could even process what had just occurred.

Part 2 of the icon post. A lot of these are older and so not as good. Images were taken from screenshots I made, google (hence some of them are grainy), and long forgotten screenshot websites. If you want credit for an original image, just drop me a line and I will gladly give it you! 1-15 are Lady Eboshi from Princess Mononoke, 16-27 are Leo, played by Tommy Chong from That 70s Show, 28-35 are Iroh from Avatar: The Last Airbender, 36-38 are Catelyn Stark, played by Michelle Fairley in Game of Thrones (not many people iconed her frustrated/angry faces, okay?), and 39-40 are Galadriel, played by Cate Blanchett in Lord of the Rings (Two Towers and Return of the King)

Typical Rules:
-Credit plz
-Comments are nice but not necessary
-Do not hotlink.

So, while I make no claims to be an expert icon maker, but it occurred to me that I make a lot of icons of people that might be hard to find for my own personal RP purposes. So I thought I'd toss them up in a couple posts. These are from the 1972 movie version of the musical 1776. 1-15 feature Howard Da Silva as Dr. Benjamin Franklin and 16-30 feature William Daniels as John Adams with other cast sprinkled in here and there. All of the images come from screencaps I took myself

Usual rules apply:
-Credit: I'm actually quite proud of most of these!
-Comments are lovely, but not necessary
-For the love of God, don't hotlink. But why would you?
-Enjoy the rest of your Independence Day, if you're American! If you're not, have a good day anyway!

So, it's official. I'm a volunteer here. I'm really excited about it. I spent several hours today shadowing tours and talking with the gal in charge of the education program. She is super nice, smart, and friendly. Also, she looks a little like Jennifer Garner. But that's beside the point! I told her what I was interested in and what my background was (when I said that I was finishing up a degree from the University of Chicago, she actually said "wow!" lmfao) and that I was looking to explore my options in terms of what I actually want to do long term. So she's working on making me a schedule to give me the "full museum experience"- working with tours, exhibits, and collections. Specifically, I might end up helping with an upcoming Asia exhibit because I have some knowledge there thanks to my Art History degree. But first I'm going to be trained as a docent on the road to becoming a tour guide. Because that is what is needed the most right now.

I start Tuesday. It's a volunteer position and not a job. But that's okay. I'm living with the parents right now, so I don't need to pay rent or anything and this will get me the experience I need to actually get a decent job in this field + possibly references. I finally feel like I'm starting to know what I'm doing. Now I just have to finish up this degree....

I think “Mary Sue” is one of those terms that has been used so broadly that it has lost all meaning. For that reason, I would generally avoid it when giving crit of fanfiction or original writing.

I have, however, applied it to stuff I wrote when I was in junior high. That character was almost completely a wishfulfillment character. She was ridiculously powerful, beautiful, and intelligent, had a tragic backstory and was almost never wrong. She was not a realistic, well-fleshed out character. It was bad writing. That is what I consider a Mary Sue.

But you know what? I think it’s okay to have them. Yeah, they can be a sign of terrible writing. Yes, people may not want to read the work they are in. But they serve a purpose. That character was strong and powerful and in control during a time when I was being bullied- at time when I was not. It was part of what got me through that. I can tell you that I am the person I am today, in part, because of that character. And that’s ultimately way more important than good or bad fanfiction. Or original fiction for that matter.

I’m not saying that people shouldn’t crit “Mary Sue” authors or give them advice. I am saying that people take it way too seriously and are, occasionally, far too mean to them. For most, it’s a phase, a step in learning how to write, and possibly something that they need. I don’t know a single author who does not have writing that they are sincerely embarrassed about, myself included. I was just fortunate not to have had internet access when going through my Mary Sue phase. That said, I have been tempted to track down all the copies of my “masterpieces” that I gave to relatives and start a bonfire….

So, for those of you not in the know [livejournal.com profile] moriahbard is one of my best friends in the entire world and together we are horrifically nerdy. I feel the need to post this aim conversation that we had a while ago about us as hobbits. Because it is still making me chuckle. Here it is, preserved in all its typo-filled, keysmashing glory.

Cut for length and unrepentant, self-indulgent nerdery. )
